Does a softener really need servicing?
It needs salt, and it needs someone to confirm occasionally that it is actually softening. A unit can look perfectly normal and be doing nothing at all.
What salt should I use?
Follow your own manufacturer documentation, because the recommendation varies by unit. Cheaper rock salt tends to leave more residue in the tank, which is what causes mushing.
How do I check it myself?
A hardness test strip on a treated tap tells you most of what you need. If it reads hard, the unit is not working, whatever the salt level says.

How often should I add salt?
Check it monthly and top it up before it drops below about a third. Letting it run empty means regenerating with plain water and losing softening without any obvious signal.
What is salt mushing?
Dissolved and recrystallised salt forming a sludge in the bottom of the brine tank. It blocks brine draw and it is why a tank occasionally needs emptying and cleaning rather than just topping up.
How do I break a salt bridge?
Carefully, with a broom handle pushed through the crust, having first made sure you are not pushing into the brine well. If it has recurred more than once, the cause is worth investigating.
Should the brine tank be cleaned?
Periodically, yes, particularly where lower grade salt has been used. The interval depends on your salt and your unit.
Does my softener need servicing if it seems fine?
A hardness test on a treated tap answers it in a minute. Seems fine and is fine are different things with a softener, because there is no warning when it stops.
