Can I clear a jam myself?
Often yes. Switch the power off at the breaker, use the hex wrench in the socket underneath, work it back and forth, then press the reset. If that does not free it, stop.
Should I repair or replace a disposal?
If it leaks from the body, replace. If it is jammed or has an electrical fault, repair is usually the cheaper and faster answer.
My sink backs up when the disposal runs.
That is usually the drain line, not the disposal. Clearing the branch line is the fix, and replacing the unit would not have helped.
Is it safe to reach into the unit?
Only with the power off at the breaker, and preferably with tongs rather than fingers. The switch on the wall is not sufficient isolation for hands in the chamber.

Why does my disposal hum without turning?
It is jammed. The motor is energised but the plate cannot rotate. Power off at the breaker, then free it with the hex wrench that came with the unit.
Where is the reset button?
On the underside of the unit, usually a small red button. A disposal that is completely silent has often just tripped it.
What should never go in a disposal?
Fibrous vegetable waste, bones, grease and coffee grounds. Grease is the one that causes drain problems well beyond the unit itself.
How long does a replacement take?
Usually a single visit, provided the mounting assembly and the discharge connection are sound.
Can you fit a disposal where there is not one?
Usually, and it depends on the existing drain configuration and a switched power supply being available. Both are checked before quoting.
Why does my disposal smell?
Food residue in the chamber and under the splash guard. If cleaning does not fix it, the smell is more likely coming from the drain line.
